I have been in this industry for about a year and a half now, and one thing is for certain: class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the new norm.

If you are unfamiliar with the term “class 4”, I don’t blame you. Roofing is boring, it’s an afterthought for homeowners. It only comes to mind when you start seeing your street filling up with yard signs or a brown spot on the ceiling in your living room from a leak.

Since you’re reading this, you’re more than likely shopping around for a new roof. Calling contractors, scheduling those free inspections, and ultimately receiving estimates. Your eyes stumble across an upgrade option to a “Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingle”. The thought crosses your mind: “What does this mean?”

Impact resistant shingles are marketed to homeowners to be the most durable shingle on the market. They’re designed to withstand the harshest weather mother nature can provide.

Hail and wind are enemy #1 for your roof. In Minnesota, we are no stranger to these events. According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, Minnesota has had 36 severe storms that have caused over a billion dollars’ worth of damage.

The most recent severe storm that rolled through the Twin Cities last month brought 70 mph winds, resulting in downed trees. Xcel Energy, the local energy provider for most of Minnesota reported that 135,000 customers suffered a power outage.

We can't talk about Minnesota's severe storms without talking about May of 2022. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, May of 2022 had six calendar days with severe weather including hail, tornadoes, and wind.

As you can see, Minnesota is no stranger to severe weather events. In recent years, the number of severe weather events has skyrocketed compared to recent history. Homeowners aren’t the only ones to take notice of this trend of severe weather lately, insurance companies have as well.

The trend of severe weather is pushing insurance companies out of “high-risk” areas. According to the Star Tribune, insurance companies operating in Minnesota have lost money in 6 of the past 7 years. Ultimately as time goes on, you will see insurance companies leaving our area, as well as insurance companies tactically adjusting your policy.

Thankfully Minnesota has made insurance companies discount homeowners policies who install products to protect their homes. Thus, we make it back to the topic at hand, the class 4 Impact Resistant shingle.

Shingle manufacturers can’t just slap “impact resistant” on their products, the shingles have to be put through testing. The most notable test, which the insurance company uses to give homeowners a discount, is the UL 2218 test.

“UL” is short for Underwriters Laboratory. In simple terms, UL tests products, and those tests are standards for numerous purposes. UL 2218 is a test for shingles, to identify what class they fall into.

The actual test itself is quite simple. To replicate hail as much as possible, UL uses a steel ball of different diameters (or classes) and drops them at different heights onto a shingle. There are 4 different-sized steel balls: class 1 is a 1.25in. ball, class 2 is a 1.5in. ball, class 3 is a 1.75in. ball, and finally class 4 is a 2in ball. The shingles are classified as one of the classes if they can withstand that certain-sized ball. It’s important to remember that the steel balls are dropped at different heights to create as much velocity as a real hailstone would have during a severe storm.

There is an outstanding report from the Institute for Business & Home Safety that summarized findings of their own of the UL test. One thing was clear, impact-resistant shingles are better at withstanding hail impacts.

How long should my shingle last, and what causes them to wear?

HOW LONG SHOULD MY SHINGLE LAST?

This is perhaps, the most common and the most important question one might ask when looking for a new roof, getting a new roof, or just having installed a new roof. Like most things, the answer is: IT ALL DEPENDS!

VARIABLES AFFECTING LONGEVITY OF SHINGLE LIFE:

Minnesota, and other northern states in general that have extreme winter weather conditions, have many weather-related factors that can negatively impact one of your home’s most important components. Let us briefly discuss the big ones here:

INSULATION:

One of the benefits of insulation is to prevent the movement of air, mainly the movement of the warm air within your livable spaces to the colder outside air that exists in your attic. Warm air inside of attics creates frost in the wintertime which deteriorates your roof sheathing at a much faster rate. This deterioration can negatively affect your shingles over time.

VENTILATION:

A vital component of any roof system, ventilation allows any warm (moist) air to escape the attic cavity thereby reducing the likelihood that frost can build up. Additionally, in the summertime, good ventilation can exhaust the warm air that builds up from the heat of the sun. In both instances, adequate ventilation immensely reduces the temperature swings within your attic and in so doing increases the life expectancy of your shingles.

ORIENTATION TO THE SUN:

Additionally, the north side of roofs, which see limited sunlight has a greater likelihood of moss/algae growth which can cause damage to the granules integral to any shingle.

As with anything if it is not done right upon installation, then it cannot be expected to last as long as it otherwise would. Diligence to items such as flashing work, roof penetrations, and nailing can all affect longevity.

Trees drop leaves, twigs, and sometimes limbs on our rooftops which over time can have a negative effect on longevity. Why Proper Roof Ventilation Matters: A Real Minnesota Example

Upon inspection of the ventilation on this roof, it was determined that the one particular vent circled below was “offsetting the system” of the rest of the vents on the house and needed to be eliminated.

No biggie! Most asphalt-shingled roof repairs such as this are easily done, that’s one of the advantages of shingles as a roofing choice.

PRO TIP : always ask your roofer to leave you a few extra shingles in case of repairs needed in the future.

Simple tools needed in this case would be a flat bar, a Sawzall for “squaring-off” the circular hole to fit the new “plug”, caulking and a few extra shingles.

After cutting the existing hole to match the square plug caulking is applied to the underside of the plug to assure a water tight seal.

PRO TIP: it’s always a good idea to utilize caulking/silicone as an additional deterrent for water.

Insert the plug into the hole and fasten down sufficiently.

PRO TIP : always install any roofing components in a “step-flashed” fashion meaning start at the bottom and each corresponding layer you add, going up the roof, is overlapped the layer below it so as to ensure water running down hill will flow over the material as designed and not create a leak. Install shingles, tying into the existing shingles adjacent to the work area.

Re-Decking 101: When Do You Need New Roof Decking in Minnesota?

Asphalt shingles are installed using pneumatic nail guns that shoot coil roofing nails through the shingle and into the sheathing or deck boards underneath. If you have sheathing, OSB or plywood, you more than likely will not have to install any new sheathing unless the OSB or plywood is in bad condition.

The need to “Re-Deck” usually comes into play when deck boards are what make up your roof deck. The problem lies in the “gapping” between those boards, as seen below:

If one shingled a roof that had deck boards with large gaps in between them the likelihood of shingle “blow-off” substantially increases! If the nails meant to attach the shingles to the decking lands within these gaps then there is nothing attaching your shingle to the deck except for the tar strip that exists on the back or top of every shingle made. Unfortunately, this tar strip is not intended to hold off large wind gusts and if the shingled isn’t properly affixed to the decking it will eventually blow off.

This fact became very evident and as a result the MN Building Code made it a requirement that any gaps over ½” wide be either filled in or re-decked. Fast forward a few years and the Code deferred to manufactures installation instructions which then evolved, to protect their warranty, into requiring that any gaps over ¼” gaps be filled in or re-decked. Unfortunately, this has become a costly addition to most roofing projects for the consumer.

On a positive note, in the event one is replacing their roof due to an insurance claim, it is commonly written into policies that “Code Upgrades” are a “coverable” cost that they will pay for. Make sure to check your policy for this type of language.

Warm air inside of attics creates frost in the winter time which deteriorates your roof sheathing at a much faster rate. This deterioration can negatively affect your shingles over time.

VENTILATION:

A vital component of any roof system, ventilation allows any warm (moist) air to escape the attic cavity thereby reducing the likelihood that frost can build up. Additionally, in the summertime, good ventilation can exhaust the hot air that builds up from the heat of the sun. In both instances, adequate ventilation greatly reduces the temperature swings within your attic and in so doing increases the life expectancy of your shingles.

ORIENTATION TO THE SUN:

Believe it or not, a shingle that prominently faces East-West will have a longer life expectancy than a shingle that faces North-South. The suns’ powerful rays deteriorate anything that it shines directly onto and an asphalt roof is no exception. Additionally, the north side of roofs, which see limited sunlight have a greater likelihood of moss/algae growth which can cause damage to the granules integral to any shingle.

QUALITY INSTALLATION:

As with anything, if it’s not done right to begin with than it can’t be expected to last as long as it otherwise would. Attention to detail items such as flashing work, roof penetrations and nailing can all affect longevity.

SURROUNDING VEGETATION:

Believe it or not, tree cover, lakes/rivers or wide-open spaces around one’s home can affect longevity of shingle. Trees drop leaves, twigs and sometimes limbs on our rooftops which over time can have a negative affect on longevity. Excessive moisture levels associated with bodies of water can affect longevity through an increase of mold/mildew and algae/moss growth. And wind can play a big role in the likelihood of “blow-off” of your shingles or other components.

Why Sealing Attic Bypasses Matters for Minnesota Homes

Attic bypasses are places in the attic where indoor air leaks up, mixing with the outdoor air that is in the attic space. These leaks allow warm air to mix with cold air in the wintertime and cooler air (air conditioning) to mix with warmer air in the summertime. When this interaction is allowed to continue overtime, the results can lead to deterioration of your roofing components such as framing, sheathing and shingles. In the wintertime, especially, this interaction can cause the most damage in the form of ice dams, condensation (see previous blog) which lead to leaking ceilings.

Sealing of attic bypasses ( as well as other common areas of air leaks ) can greatly increase the efficiency of your homes HVAC equipment, increase the longevity of your exterior components and create a more comfortable living space within the home. As illustrated above, air leakage into the attic cavity can come from many different points throughout the space: electrical junctions, sewer pipes, chimneys, etc. In some cases, they can originate from the basement, as is the case with most chimney chases or HVAC supply runs.

The main objective in defending these bypasses is to STOP THE FLOW OF AIR by utilizing insulation in its many forms. A common dilemma homeowner’s come across is planning multiple scope items at once while undertaking a home renovation project that can be affected those multiple scope items. One example would be installing windows at the same time as replacing the siding and roofing.

Scheduling of roofers, siders and window installers during the height of the busy season in MN can sometimes be a daunting task considering we Minnesotans have to cram the majority of our exterior projects into the allowable warm weather months that Mother Nature allows us in any given year. Couple that with monsoon type rains, the sprinkling in of the occasional hail storm and the dreadful high 90-degree temperatures with 50% humidity levels and it can sometimes lead to rushed projects done in haphazard orders in an attempt to get it all done before the snowballs start flying.

But, where there’s a will, there’s a way and with a bit of creative construction coordination anything is possible.

In genera l, it is always smartest to work from the top down. There’s nothing worse that tearing off an old roof only to have the debris fall down and scrape/mark up brand new siding/windows that have just been put on the wall.

The main component of a new roof that comes in contact with any siding is the Drip Edge metal. This decorative metal hangs over the edge of the roof deflecting water away from the fascia and protecting the edges of the roof decking from being compromised by wind driven rains. If installed properly, any new metals installed over existing wood fascia can be tucked up behind the new drip edge and will look and act as it should.

Siding and Windows need a bit more of a hand-in-hand approach when installing at the same time.

In the picture shown above we have an example of a project where the windows needed to be installed first, since they were full frame windows as opposed to a replacement/insert window . The flange attached to the window needed to be attached to the wall sheathing, properly sealed with window tape over newly installed weather resistant barrier (WRB) and in order to do so, the existing siding needed to be removed around each window.

With this project, the windows needed to be done first and the siding was scheduled afterwards so that the vinyl accessories could be installed properly around the new window. In this case, the sider’s schedule was pushed back and the window installer was ready to go.

The solution was to remove the pieces of siding in the immediate areas around each window, WRB installed up and under the above siding and existing WRB (so as to properly shed water) and the windows installed fully with accompanying tapes and sealant. Cap nails were used to secure the new WRB in place both on the wall and over the lower courses of existing siding (so as to properly shed water). The cut ends of the existing siding were secured temporarily with nails to prevent blow-off until the sider could get there to begin.

The end result was a well-executed “work around” of tradespeople who successfully installed a water-tight exterior system with a beautiful new look.

Minnesota Ice Dams: What They Are and Why Your Roof Suffers

White wintry wonderlands are beautiful to look at from within the warm confines of our homes but when the wrath of the almighty ice dam starts becoming an unwanted guest inside our homes is when we quickly learn how mighty Mother Nature can be.

A case in point is the photo below. If you find yourself in the circumstance that you have noticed a collection of ice forming on the side of your home, such as this; Then it's safe to assume that the ice dam has already arrived!

As Minnesotans, we've all seen images such as this either on our house or our neighbors. Some years are worse than others. If you've ever had to battle an ice dam, the experience is an experience you’ll never forget and presumably one that you do want to live through again.

The picture below sums up what is happening on the rooftop.

The damages may be substantial, the remediation's can be costly, and in some circumstances, daily living or day-to-day operations can be interrupted while the clean-up ensues.

DEFENSE

If there is no snow, there will likely be no ice. In other words, keep your roof clear of snow accumulations of 6” or more. The big box stores sell Roof Rakes which can be used from the ground level to manually pull the snow off the roof before it has an opportunity to freeze. In cases where your home's roof is more than 10 feet off the ground, your options may be limited. This scenario would require someone to physically get on top of the roof and remove the snow.

Ice Pucks, Heat Cables, or Salt Socks are tools to help in the battle if the ice has already formed. If the accumulation is severe enough, the ice may need removal from the roof using Ice Picks or even Steam Machines.

In this great state, we call home, the battle with the almighty Ice Dam is our innate reality but one that we can win with a bit of know-how and a touch of elbow grease.
